WBO Heavyweight champion Joseph Parker will likely be back on the 8th of April in New Zealand. Parker will likely be making a voluntary defence of his WBO Heavyweight title. Parker is co-promoted by Duco events & Top Rank. Both promotional companies have been fantastic in releasing eye catching headlines over the past two months for the Heavyweight star.
April 8th options:
Negotiations are reportedly underway for Parker to face Jarrell Miller. Miller is undefeated after 18 fights & he’s coming off an impressive win over Fred Kassi. David Price is also in consideration for the bout. Price is a big name in the UK, but he’s been unlucky, coming up short in several bouts in which his opponents have later failed PED tests. Hughie Fury is also in the mix, however it’s difficult to see the economics of that bout making sense since the opponent will have to travel to New Zealand.
Despite what has been reported the WBO situation is still unclear. It’s changing day by day. Several sources have mentioned Hughie is mandatory. However Parker’s team are now acknowledging that they may make the mandatory defence against Haye in the middle of 2017. Haye faces Bellew on the 4th of March and provided he wins, the UK star will be able to begin negotiations for the mandatory bout with Parker. Since Parker will already be fighting on the 8th of April, both teams can simply request an extension.
Miller isn’t well known in the USA, however David Price is well known in the UK. The Price bout makes more sense in terms of publicity, however it will be interesting to see how this develops. Miller is definitely the front runner from everything we have been told. Keep checking this story.
