We are one week away from Povetkin vs Wilder in Russia. Povetkin is the mandatory challenger for Wilder, who holds the WBC title. The only problem is, the fight is close to being called off by the WBC due to several VADA tests.
According to reports across the internet including ESPN which is highly credible, Povetkin tested positive for the use of Meldonium between April 11th & April 27th, months after the enhancer was officially banned. Medicinal & Doctor summaries online state that Meldonium can be used to assist with breathing and assist with recovery, essentially being a performance enhancer.
Combined this with the fact that Showtime still hasn’t announced whether it has bought the rights to Wilder vs Povetkin, this bout will likely be called off soon. With the slim chance that it does go ahead, it remains to be seen whether Povetkin will be allowed to fight for Wilder’s title, which would totally destroy the purpose of the bout going ahead.
Our prediction is it will be called off sometime within the next 48 hours. It’s not all doom and gloom for next week, simply shift your focus to Joseph Parker vs Takam which should be an interesting bout on the same night. The winner will become mandatory challenger to Anthony Joshua and the purse bid for the winner vs Joshua will be enforced at some time in November, if both sides don’t make a deal.
